When Willpower Isn’t Enough With Anne Janzer
Author and teacher Anne Janzer argues that “butt in chair” advice often relies too heavily on willpower, which research suggests is finite and can lead to shame and identity doubts when it runs out. She offers a five-part toolkit—PAPER—for staying consistent when inspiration lags: Purpose (reframe writing as serving a reader or future self), Accountability (use written commitments, partners, or external incentives, focusing on process goals over aggressive outcomes), Play (add mystery and games to research, drafting, and revision, such as a “writing time treasure hunt” or swapping boring words), Environment (engineer distractions away and make the workspace pleasant), and Rest (protect mental space, say no to other demands, and avoid writing from an empty tank). She notes these ideas appear in her updated book The Writer’s Process, its workbook, and her blog.
